FAQ’s-EXTERIOR PAINTING

  • How much area does a gallon on paint cover?

Most typically, a gallon of paint covers 300 square feet per gallon, but it varies per substrate.  Common exterior substrates such as heavier stucco textures like double dash stucco and porous CMU block yield less coverage per gallon of paint and often require more heavy body products in the prime coat.  Also, certain colors, such as bright or deep colors are often more translucent, and may require additional coats.

  • When is a primer required on an exterior surface?

Bare, unpainted surfaces, very glossy surfaces, some shop-primed surfaces, or chalky surfaces require proper preparation as well as an appropriate primer before finish painting to bond to or fill the porous surface and provide a consistent base on which to finish paint.  Often, money can be saved on your project, where the surface is previously painted, but patching is done by simply spot-priming the new patches.

  • Why is the flashing or coping peeling?

This is a commonly seen issue with an existing painted building.  Smooth metal is very hard for paint to stick to and often flashing is delivered galvanized and in a greasy dirty condition.  By etching the metal, with an environmentally compliant solution, the surface is cleaned and chemically sanded to provide a better surface for paint to adhere.  Many painters skip this part to save effort and cut corners only for problems later to appear.  Also these sun-beaten surfaces need higher quality coatings to hold up.  Consider using a light industrial or high performance coating if possible.
