FAQ’s-HIGH PERFORMANCE COATINGS

  • Can we spray high performance coatings?

Sometimes yes, but it can be a risky task.  Slow drying and solvent-based coatings, can travel miles as overspray in open air, resulting in extensive property damage and legal and financial risk.  Work areas must be extensively or completely curtained.  Equipment must be completely protected.  Also, extensive Personal Protective Equipment may be required within the work area, such as respirators, safety goggles and full body spray suits for anyone to work safely in such a work area (consult technical data, MSDS, local and OSHA requirements).

  • When should high performance coatings be used?

There are many various reasons, but the many different kinds of high performance coatings are designed to better withstand wear and tear from moisture, chemicals, increased abrasion, heat, and the list goes on.  If you need to select a coating system for a building element, consult with a representative from a commercial coatings company such as Sherwin-Williams, Tnemec, PPG/Ameron, Carboline, Vista, Dunn-Edwards or others, or consult with the architect for the structure you are building.

  • Why is my steel applied with high performance coating peeling?

It’s probably a preparation issue.  If it’s peeling down to the bare metal, it’s probably the shop primer applied or the preparation of that steel prior to the shop primer being installed.  If the steel wasn’t abrasive blasted as necessary, and coated with shop primer before rust can re-form, the primer can heal.  Scars during delivery may also cause areas that need to be addressed before coating, possibly by mechanical abrasion (see applicable ASTM standards) and spot-priming.  If coating is de-laminating from primer, the primer may have not been compatible with the topcoats, or may have needed to be sanded prior to topcoat application.  See technical and application data prior to application of such coating systems, or as necessary to repaired flawed finishes.
